Walks and Hikes

  • The GR 34 TrailThis legendary trail winds along the Breton coast, with some of its most beautiful sections in Pays Bigouden. We particularly enjoy the dunes of the Baie d’Audierne and the paths connecting Penmarch to Île-Tudy. These routes are also suitable for cycling.
  • Tréminou Circuit – 13.5 KM
This is the closest walk to the Presbytère and one of our favorites. This marked trail takes you through the countryside of Plomeur for a peaceful hike, including a visit to the Tréminou chapel and its history.Note: After the Tréminou chapel, follow the red and yellow markers for 1.5 km. The return to the yellow trail is poorly indicated. Upon reaching a main road preceded by a small roundabout, turn right onto the road; the yellow marker will be 100 meters ahead on your left.Starting Point: Parking at Plomeur Town Hall
  • La Torche Loop
This well-known and varied marked loop passes near the Presbytère and leads you to the Pointe de la Torche, alternating between woods, fields, and dunes. It's a magnificent route; allow a full day to complete the entire circuit (approximately 7 hours of walking). For a long beach walk, start from the Pointe de la Torche; the beach stretches for kilometers up to Audierne.
  • Plonéour Lanvern Bay
Here, you'll find a beautiful marked loop of about ten kilometers. Park at the Kervillic or Trégalet localities, where you'll easily spot the initial markers.
  • Plonéour Lanvern Pond
A peaceful walk around this pond, known as Plan du Moulin Neuf, located 8 km from the Presbytère. It takes about 1.5 hours to circle the pond.
  • Along the Coast and Villages
Between Saint-Guénolé and Pont L’Abbé, you'll find beautiful walks alternating between fishing villages (Penmarch, Guilvinec, Lesconil, Loctudy...), marinas, rocky shores, and sandy beaches. During your stroll, don't miss the opportunity to stop for a drink in the many local cafes and bistros along the coast.
  • Along the Odet River
Venture to Sainte-Marine or Bénodet to discover the walk along the Odet River, under chestnut trees and surrounded by rhododendrons (in bloom between April and May). Mushroom enthusiasts will find this area abundant in the fall.
  • Le Ster Beach between Le Guilvinec and Kerity
The beautiful Ster Beach stretches between the Sables Blancs Beach in Le Guilvinec and the charming marina of Kerity. It's worth exploring both on foot and by bike. The coastal path (GR34) is also pleasant. For the active, there's a fitness trail along the way.
  • Pointe du Raz
Don't miss the stunning walks around the Pointe du Raz, offering breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the open sea.
  • Pointe du Millier
Located near Beuzec-Cap-Sizun, it is a natural gem of Finistère offering breathtaking views of the Iroise Sea and the steep cliffs of Cap Sizun. This preserved site is perfect for hiking, thanks to its well-maintained trails. Along the way, you’ll discover the Keriolet watermill, a historic site nestled in lush greenery, as well as exceptional biodiversity, including heathlands, hidden coves, and wild cliffs.
  • Beg Meil
This charming corner of Brittany offers a unique setting, blending sandy beaches, hidden coves, and wooded landscapes. The coastal trails (GR34) allow you to walk along the cliffs and enjoy breathtaking views of Concarneau Bay and the Glénan Islands in the distance.
Starting from the port or Beg Meil beach, you can venture into the Penfoulic woods or follow the coves to the Pointe de Mousterlin. The diversity of landscapes is truly enchanting: wild dunes, marshes rich in biodiversity, and protected areas home to typical Breton flora and fauna.
  • The Monts d’Arrée

The Monts d’Arrée, true lands of legend in the heart of Brittany, offer an ideal terrain for hiking enthusiasts. This massif, the highest in the region, captivates with its wild and diverse landscapes, blending rocky ridges, golden heathlands, and verdant valleys. The trails, often steeped in mysticism, lead to iconic sites like Roc'h Trevezel or Roc'h Ruz, offering spectacular views of the surrounding hills. Hiking in the Monts d’Arrée is an immersion into raw and unspoiled nature, where silence is broken only by the whisper of the wind or the songs of birds. A rejuvenating and must-visit experience for lovers of wide-open spaces.

Visits and Points of Interest

Eckmühl Lighthouse

This is the most famous maritime lighthouse in Finistère. Standing 60 meters tall (with 290 steps!), it is one of the symbols of Pays Bigouden. Built at the end of the 19th century, it ensures the safety of this rugged coastline, known as one of the most dangerous in France for sailors due to its numerous reefs. The lighthouse is open to visitors year-round, with nighttime tours available in July and August. From the top, the view over Audierne Bay is breathtaking.

.

Tulips in Spring

La Torche is well-known for its tulip fields (grown for their bulbs), which burst into vibrant colors between March and April. It's a feast for the eyes (though less so for the land, which we feel is overly affected by the heavy use of pesticides). The company Kandoorp, which operates these fields, is a familiar name in the region. It was established by a Dutch family who settled in Plomeur in 1980. Their shop, open year-round, offers a variety of bulbs at affordable prices.

Between March 15 and April 15, don’t miss the Flower Festival: activities, field tours, and floral displays are on offer.

Cideries

Cider is the quintessential Breton beverage, and some excellent vintages are produced in Pays Bigouden.

The most famous (but not the only!) artisanal cider house is the Kerné Cidery in Pouldreuzic. They also offer tours and events to help visitors understand the cider-making process, from maceration to blending.

Distillerie des Menhirs

This family distillery—one of the first in Brittany—has been crafting local spirits for a century. They are responsible for two gems: the first Pommeau de Bretagne A.O.C. and the world’s only pure buckwheat whisky (Eddu Silver). Perfectly paired with a slice of Kouign Amann or a Quimper Madeleine.

Maison Hénaff Museum

Located in Pouldreuzic, the museum is housed in the very home where Jean and Marie-Corentine Hénaff lived with their children. This iconic place, inaugurated in 2007 to mark the company’s centenary, chronicles the Hénaff family’s journey and the history of their business. Visitors are taken on a captivating journey through a century of history, blending the life of Pouldreuzic with the story of Hénaff.

HALIOTIKA

The Cité de la Pêche in Guilvinec is a center dedicated to exploring the world of sea fishing, located at Guilvinec port in Finistère, Brittany. This interactive and educational venue offers a unique immersion into the lives of fishermen and the maritime professions. It’s designed for both families and sea enthusiasts, showcasing the maritime heritage of the region while raising awareness about sustainability and the preservation of marine resources.

Shore Fishing

The best spots for shore fishing are often closely guarded secrets by the locals. However, by staying in one of our gîtes, you become, for the duration of your stay, true Bigoudens. Allow us to share a few of our secrets with you.

General Guidelines

It is essential to follow the rules in place: observe authorized fishing periods to protect reproduction cycles, respect the minimum size requirements for crustaceans, and so on. The Breton coast guards are vigilant, and fines for violations can be steep!

Between La Torche and Tronoën

During low spring tides and calm weather (with little wind and few waves), you can gather tellines (small clams) at the edge of the waves, near the bunkers stranded on the beach. These delicate shellfish are delicious, especially when cooked with pasta.

Kerity (Penmarch)

The rocky coast of Tour al Ster, between Kerity and Le Guilvinec, reveals numerous rocks at low tide where you can find mussels, shellfish, sea urchins, and crabs. During very low spring tides, normally submerged rocks become accessible. Some even say these rocks sometimes hide lobsters.

Tip: Be sure to gently replace the rocks in their original position after lifting them!

Île Chevalier (Pont-l’Abbé)

The southern tip of the island is known for its cockles and clams, making it a must-visit spot for shore fishing enthusiasts.
Note: Check the area’s opening schedule online before heading out.

Le Letty (Bénodet)

A bit further past Bénodet, Le Letty Beach is an excellent spot for collecting cockles. It’s a perfect place to extend your gourmet escapade.

The Beaches of Pays Bigouden

The beaches of Pays Bigouden offer exceptional diversity, ranging from wild expanses to peaceful hideaways.

La Torche

The largest, closest, and most famous beach...
This immense stretch of sand, a true paradise for surfers, extends for kilometers all the way to Audierne! It was even a strong contender against Tahiti to host the surfing events for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The most popular spot is the Pointe de la Torche, but a bit further, you can find quieter areas near the Tronoën Chapel. Don’t miss its intricately carved calvary, the oldest of the seven great calvaries of Brittany.

Pors Carn

Located between Saint-Guénolé and the Pointe de la Torche (to the left of the point), this beautiful crescent-shaped beach is also a favorite among surfers. It boasts the added perk of housing the area’s two famous beach bars: Chez Marie Cath' and Tom Café.

Ster Beach (Kerity side) and Sables Blancs Beach (Le Guilvinec side)

An ideal family beach located between Le Guilvinec and Kérity. With calm waters and gentle waves, it’s perfect for relaxing safely.
If you’re a fan of water walking, this is the best spot in the area.

Lesconil

On either side of Lesconil, you’ll find beautiful white sand beaches, perfect for strolls, sandcastles, or sunbathing sessions. Here, the sea is calmer, as are the waves, making it an ideal spot for peaceful swimming.

Île-Tudy Beach

This long stretch of fine sand runs between Île-Tudy and Sainte-Marine. It’s an idyllic setting to enjoy a beautiful day by the water.

Penhors (Pouldreuzic)

With its wild landscapes and friendly atmosphere, Penhors Beach perfectly embodies the spirit of authentic Brittany. This vast sandy expanse, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, is ideal for families, water sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Known for its spectacular sunsets, it’s also a popular spot for surfers and kite-surfers thanks to its consistent waves.

Festivals and Fest Noz

The region is brimming with all kinds of events and festivals (art, culture, gastronomy, music…). To avoid creating a list that’s too long or incomplete, we recommend visiting the this website: www.destination-paysbigouden.com , which is well-designed and regularly updated.
You'll find plenty of ideas in the “Things to See/Do” section.

For Fest Noz (the unmissable Breton folk dances), stay tuned to the local tourist offices!

There are many rental shops along the coast (especially near La Torche), all with good reputations.
Here are two excellent options with great value for money that, in our opinion, stand out from the rest.

A Little Further Afield...

Are you staying for several days and have time to explore Finistère? Venture beyond our beloved Pays Bigouden and discover even more!

Bénodet and Sainte-Marine

The oldest and most famous seaside resort in Finistère, Bénodet has long attracted the English, followed by the Dutch and Germans. Despite some 20th-century modern constructions we’d rather forget, this small town at the mouth of the Odet River has retained its bucolic Breton charm. Stroll along its quays, admire the scenery, and enjoy a gourmet break on the terrace of a crêperie.

Quimper

The capital of Finistère, Quimper was spared from the bombings of World War II. Its Gothic cathedral and historic center make it a quintessential Breton town. It’s delightful to wander its streets, and shopping enthusiasts will find charming boutiques with refined selections.

Locronan

Locronan (Lokorn in Breton) is an exceptional medieval village near Quimper. Listed among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France" and a member of the "Small Towns of Character," it captivates with its well-preserved architectural heritage. The village center, around the Saint-Ronan Church, features slate roofs, a cobbled square with a central well, and Renaissance granite houses. A true journey back in time.

Douarnenez and Pointe du Raz

Take the "Route du Vent Solaire" to reach these sites. The Pointe du Raz, although a bit too touristy at its entrance with parking lots, shops, and restaurants, offers less-traveled rugged trails along the cliffs, revealing breathtaking views of the Baie d’Audierne.
Douarnenez, on the other hand, enchants with its picturesque neighborhoods and colorful ports, immortalized by many painters. Its coastal landscapes and soft light are a feast for the eyes.

Presqu’île de Crozon (a favorite!)

Facing Brest, the Crozon Peninsula is a wild gem in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique. Its hiking trails offer stunning panoramas, and accessing the coves, though sometimes challenging, is well worth the effort. For a different perspective of the coastline, try kayaking!
The stunning cove of the Île Vierge (the only one accessible on foot) is simply unforgettable.

Oysters in Riec-sur-Bélon

Oyster lovers must visit this small fishing village, renowned for its oyster farms. In season, some producers offer tastings on-site, with platters of oysters paired with a glass of dry white wine. An authentic and delicious experience!

Auray

Nestled in a bay in Morbihan, Auray charms visitors with its typical port, medieval alleys, and vibrant community of artists and galleries. A stroll through this quaint little town is always a delight.

Pont-Aven

Nicknamed the "City of Painters," Pont-Aven is a must-visit destination. Walk along the Aven River, explore its art galleries, and savor a galette or the famous Breton biscuits. A treat for both the eyes and the taste buds!

Concarneau

Situated in a magnificent bay, Concarneau is a fortified medieval town entirely focused on the sea. Its ramparts, which have withstood centuries and storms, offer a glimpse into Breton maritime history. A must-see for history and ocean enthusiasts.

Brest

Don't miss Océanopolis, a unique ocean discovery center in Europe. A true dive into the marine world, it features three pavilions dedicated to different environments: polar, tropical, and temperate. Each pavilion offers spectacular aquariums, educational activities, and interactive exhibits that help visitors understand the richness and diversity of marine ecosystems. With over 10,000 marine animals, Océanopolis captivates visitors of all ages, whether it's through majestic sharks, adorable seals, or vibrant coral reefs. It's a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the wonders of the underwater world and commit to ocean conservation.

Eat Well!

For your local and seasonal basket!

Here’s a (non-exhaustive!) list of our favorite places to find high-quality local products.

Fishmongers and Seafood Markets

  • While we hesitate to recommend supermarkets, the fishmonger at Leclerc in Pont L’Abbé has earned a strong reputation for its freshness, large displays, great value, and wide selection (they own their own fishing fleet).
  • For shellfish directly from the producer at excellent prices, head to the Locarec Viviers in Penmarch (open daily from 9 AM to 12 PM and 3 PM to 5 PM, plus Saturday mornings from 10 AM to 12 PM). They offer clams, cockles, oysters, lobsters, crabs, spider crabs, and langoustines—all fresh!
  • In Guilvinec, visit Lechiagat Viviers for oysters (18 Rue de l’Océan, Treffiagat). Mention Baptiste and Susanna, and for just a few euros, they’ll shuck your oysters for you!
  • We also love the small family-run fishmonger Kerhom Pillons at the port of Kérity. They offer the daily catch (without trawling!) at reasonable prices—don’t miss their delicious langoustines! Open from 9 AM to 12:30 PM and 5 PM to 7 PM.
  • The fishmonger at the port of Saint-Guénolé is another great option.
  • The fishmonger at Guilvinec port is known for excellent quality, but its popularity with tourists has made their prices a bit steep.

  • La Ferme de St Joseph (Peumerit): Offers cow cheeses (fresh, semi-fresh, aged), goat cheeses (fresh, semi-fresh), fromage blanc, thick milk called "gwell" (similar to yogurt, eaten sweet or savory), cow tommes, and butter. Facebook: facebook.com/ferme.destjoseph.9.

Wine Shop

  • La Cave Fred’Eric (Plomeur): Located in front of the town hall, this couple of wine experts is welcoming and full of great advice. They also prepare delicious traditional crêpes and galettes, perfect for breakfast or dinner!

Where to Grab a Drink or Party?

Le Vivier des Etoc’s (Penmarch)
This pub is quickly becoming "The Place to Be" in Penmarch, thanks to its spacious setting at the Kerity port, live concerts, and fish & chips paired with a pint of local beer.

Chez Marie-Cath' (Saint-Guénolé)
An idyllic beach bar set on the dunes of Pors Carn, well-known throughout the region. Don’t forget to try the legendary Kouigns with a pint of cider.

Brasserie Merlin (Saint-Guénolé)
Brewed in Penmarch by Sara and Cyril, you’ll find a wide range of their beers on tap to enjoy on-site or take away. MERLIN offers contemporary-inspired beers as well as timeless recipes from European and American brewing traditions.

Le Cap Caval (Plomeur - Beuzec)
Open only on Saturdays, this "surfer's nightclub" is both fair-trade and eco-responsible—a unique venue! They occasionally host live concerts.

La Mars (Pont L’Abbé)
An institution. The (elderly) owner is known by all and has run this pub for decades. Enjoy pints in a lively atmosphere that often stretches late into the night.

Le Daniel’s Pub (Saint-Jean Trolimon)
A popular pub among locals, occasionally hosting live concerts.

Bar Le Bataclan (Guilvinec)
The hangout spot for fishermen! This is where many come to spend their (often boozy) evenings.

La Tulipe (Plomeur)
Just steps from the Presbytère de Plomeur, this bar is a well-known gathering spot in the region, serving drinks late into the evening.

Les Brisants (Lechiagat)
A 100% Bigouden address not to be missed if you’re visiting Guilvinec. Its lovely terrace is well-known for its view of Guilvinec’s port.

Fest-Noz
The ultimate festive experience in Finistère! These are pop-up dances where you can enjoy vibrant and lively Breton music while sipping locally brewed ciders and beers. You can easily find Fest-Noz schedules online, such as this one: Tamm-Kreiz Fest-Noz Calendar.

KENAVO!
